The Society (B.A.S.) was founded in 1847 and as such is one of the oldest in the country. It is the senior body in the County in the fields of Archaeology, Architecture and Local History. It has an active specialist section for Natural History. The Society also founded the County Museum and still owns the main museum buildings and a large part of its collections, although the museum is now leased and run by the County Council.  The B.A.S. covers the whole of the old county of Buckinghamshire from Milton Keynes in the north, to Eton in the south.

The Chess Valley Archaeological and Historical Society was founded in 1964 with the aim of studying and promoting local archaeology and history. The first President was Dr Kenneth Oakley, who uncovered the Piltdown Fraud. The practical work of the Society began with the excavation of the Romano-British villa at Latimer. An account of the excavation was written up and published by the Society in 1971 and is still a standard work of reference.
