TRADING STANDARDS ALERTS

22.4.08 :  TELEPHONE SURVEYS BY CARE AGENCIES :  Often the easiest way for companies and agencies to understand if their targets and goals have been met is to employ a telephone marketing team to ask the questions on their behalf.
If you receive cold calling telephone calls you should not give any personal information over the telephone. If the call is from a company or agency you have dealt with previously they will already have your personal details so there is no need for you to give them personal information again.
If the marketing company require further information about your circumstances, ask them to put their questions in writing. Ensure you speak with someone before replying.

22.4.08 :  PRIZE WINNERS : People in Buckinghamshire have been inundated with letters addressed to Mr/Mrs.   The information claims a prize may have been won, which has been donated by a local company.  The prize appears to be gym membership, in some cases a 'voluntary' charge of £3 a week is required.
Looking at various internet sites and forums the general view is to treat this with caution and not to hand over credit cards or monies at all.

4.4.08 :  BUCKS TRADING STANDARDS ISSUE WARNINGS ABOUT

RECONDITIONED CAR ENGINES :  Following complaints about reconditioned engines we are warning consumers to be cautious when entering this particular market which can be fraught with problems for the unwary.

Click Here for More Information from Bucks Trading Standards.

17.2.08 :  FOR ONE DAY ONLY IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE !!

The 'for one day only sale' is back. Late last year we had a raft of complaints following people attending these 'to good too be true sales'.  These people let curiosity get the better of them, and allegedly paid inflated prices for worthless goods.

Organisers of mock auctions usually book a venue for one day and advertise the event as a clearance sale or stock liquidation. They often distribute leaflets advertising expensive branded goods such as PCs, TVs and Hi-Fi's at greatly reduced prices. They also advertise old stock from department stores.

We are advising people to be suspicious if they see promotions for sales at ridiculously low prices.
Those hiring out venues to these type of events need to be aware that they could be left with a lot of disappointed people and possibly no payment for the hire of the hall. More information on One day sales

SCAMS & CONS

DECEMBER 2007 :  E-MAILS SCAMS - PHISHING

Phishing involves email or pop-up messages which appear that claim to be from a business or organisation you may deal with, for example, an internet service provider, bank or online payment service. The message may ask you to 'update', 'validate', or 'confirm' your account information.

The messages direct you to a website that looks just like a legitimate organisation's site. But it's a bogus site that exists simply to trick you into revealing your personal information so the operators can use your identity.

Never respond to email or pop-up messages that ask for your personal or financial information, and don't click on links in the message. Don't cut and paste a link from the message into your web browser - phishers can make links look like they go to a genuine site, but then actually take you to a look-alike site. If you are concerned about your account, contact the organisation using a phone number you know to be genuine, or open a new internet browser session and type in the company's correct web address yourself. Using anti-virus software and a firewall, and keeping them up to date, can also help.

STRATEGIC OPTIONS CONSULTATION - CHILTERN DISTRICT COUNCIL :

The Chiltern Development Framework is a new way of planning for the future of the District. It will consist of a folder of documents prepared at different times called "Local Development Documents". The first and most important of these, the Core Strategy, will set out an overall vision and strategy for Chiltern that will guide the future development of the area and set out which parts of the District might be the best locations for new homes and other appropriate development up to 2026. Other documents produced by the Council as part of the Framework will have to be in conformity with the policies contained within the Core Strategy.

This document is a key stage in preparing the Core Strategy. It sets out alternative Scenarios for development in the District up to 2026. Comments are sought on which you think is most appropriate for the future of the District. Your comments will be considered and the Council will then need to prepare a full draft of the Core Strategy. We will consult on this prior to its submission to the Planning Inspectorate. An independent Inspector will hold an Examination to consider the Core Strategy and its overall content and soundness and will subsequently set out the final form of the document.

CONSULTATION END DATE - FRIDAY 11TH AUGUST

PUBLIC APPEAL BY BUCKS COUNTY COUNCILWe have been asked to make you aware who you should contact to report street light failures and other highway problems such as damaged pavements, potholes in roads and damaged street signs.

The answer is "Highways on Call" which can be contacted on 0845 230 2882 or you can e-mail them at hoc@buckscc.gov.uk

Unfortunately local councils have cut back on their "scouts" so more money can be used for gritting and road maintenance. As a result they have become more dependant on the public to keep them informed. Usually the necessary repairs are carried out promptly.

STOP THOSE NUISANCE & UNSOLICITED CALLS AND E-MAILS

We all get annoyed by the volume of non-requested mail that comes through our doors or by those telephone calls trying to sell us unwanted double glazing or new kitchens or by Faxes trying to sell us Fax Paper and the like.

Services are available most of which can be setup on-line through schemes by a number of Preference Services.

Click on the links above for the Mail Preference Service, the Telephone Preference Service, the Fax Preference Service and various other Services. You can then in most instances apply to be included within their lists - so that Companies are advised not contact you.

Please note that it takes some time for your Registrations which are entirely free of charge to take effect - but eventually you will find the number of contacts made with you will gradually diminish - although will never be completely stopped.
